2011: Registration exercise to hold in January —Jega

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega has said the registration of voters for the 2011 election will hold in January.

Jega said this on the margins of the train the trainers’ workshop for INEC staff for the exercise which began in Abuja, on Monday.

He explained that the time extension the commission is to benefit from would afford it the needed time to acquire and fully deploy the data capturing machines needed for the exercise.

Jega said arrangements for the acquisition of the DDC machines had been concluded noting that sooner than later the machines would arrive.

According to him, “We do not want to pre-empt things, we’ve done our preparations and our planning.

“As soon as formalities are completed we will make an announcement on the new time table.

“We have finished everything about the procurement of the DDC machines.

“And I want to assure you that the machines will now be in our hands in good time before the commencement of the registration exercise.

“Despite the new time plan, the registration exercise will now be sometimes in January but when we announce the time table the details will be made available to the public.”
