Higgins to flop like a Tiger

JOHN HIGGINS

JOHN HIGGINS has been warned: You're not out of the Woods yet.

The three-time world snooker champion will return from a six-month ban in Germany in a fortnight.
Higgins, 35, was punished for bringing the game into disrepute.
And 2005 Crucible king Shaun Murphy reckons the Scot faces a battle to re-establish himself like Tiger Woods after the golfer's marriage was destroyed by the revelations of a string of affairs.

Football Oracle, Paul the octopus dies

Paul the Octopus, who accurately predicted the result of every German soccer match as well as the final in this year‘s World Cup in South Africa, has died.

The mollusk-turned-sage passed away naturally in his aquarium in the western German city of Oberhausen overnight, Sealife said yesterday in a statement on its website. According to Bloomberg, aquarium workers were “devastated” when they found him dead yesterday morning.

Paul, who was 2 1/2 years old, became a media sensation in Germany and around the world this summer with his talent for World Cup predictions. He tipped winners by choosing between two mussel-filled containers adorned with the flags of each team.

German fans were not amused when he chose Spain over Germany in the semi-finals in July, leading to threats that featured octopus menu ideas. Still, the oracle continued to receive wide attention after the World Cup.

“Paul inspired people of all continents,” the aquarium‘s general manager, Stefan Porwoll, said in the statement. “He won all our hearts, and we will sorely miss him.”

Paul‘s tank was adorned with the flags of World Cup countries and a replica trophy recalls his successes. Spanish visitors grateful for his foresight flocked to the aquarium. A book deal, a movie contract and endorsements followed.

The octopus even stoked international tension when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused the West of attempting to “manipulate people‘s minds through superstition, an octopus, fortune-telling and such things.” Paul’s remains will be cremated.

We have 48 pregnant women in camp – Commandant

Uchedu Victor
There are no fewer than 48 pregnant women at the Lagos State Resettlement Camp, Agbowa, Epe Local Government Area of the state, the Camp Commandant and a senior officer with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Ganiyu Wewe, has said.

This is coming on the heels of a 19-year-old flood victim, Mrs. Uchedu Victor, who was delivered of a baby girl on Monday at the Agbowa General Hospital.

Wewe said of the 48 pregnant women in the camp, six might be delivered of babies any moment from now.

He said there was no cause for alarm as the government had made adequate arrangements to take care of the situation, noting that nurses and doctors had been asked to relocate to the mobile clinics near the camp to provide services and deal with emergencies.

When reminded that by the time the 48 expectant mothers gave birth, the camp would be overstretched, he spoke confidently, “There is no cause for alarm. We will cross the bridge when we get there.”

Meanwhile, the camp was thrown into jubilation on Monday when one of its campers, Victor, gave birth to a baby girl.

The Bad Romance star has racked up more than one billion overall views of her material on the video sharing website.
According to internet research company famecount.com her total currently stands at 1,002,734,757.
Tweeting to her nearly seven million followers on Twitter she said: "We reached one billion views on YouTube little monsters!

"I dub u kings and queens of YouTube!"
That figure doesn't represent views of a single video.

The 16-year-old is a very close second place behind Gaga in terms of overall viewings with 967 million views of his content on YouTube.
It's not the first time Lady Gaga has set a new record online.
Back in August she overtook Britney Spears to become the most followed person on Twitter.
She recently became the first living star to break the 20 million Facebook fans barrier and remains the most popular living star on both sites.

Lulu to join Take That on tour?

Lulu could perform Relight My Fire with Take That
Lulu might be asked to join Take That on tour to sing her guest vocals on Relight My Fire, Howard Donald has said.
The band will be touring together for the first time in 16 years next year, and Howard said he would suggest bringing Lulu back for part of the tour.
"We might ask her, there's every possibility - I'll put that one forward to the lads," he said.
Howard added that having Robbie Williams back on tour with them would make the shows more exciting.
The singer said: "It's going to bring surprises, because Robbie's got his own mind and can go off on an tangent. He's an amazing performer whereas I do what I do, I do my songs, I perform but I've never been the sort of showman like Robbie."
Take That's tour with Robbie, which coincides with their reunion album Progress, has been a year in the making, Howard said, and he promised they would try to top their Circus tour.
He said: "The Circus cries out for so many different things for a show whereas Progress doesn't, but there is meaning behind Progress and there is a way of transferring that on to the stage.

Reps fracas: Court frees lawmaker

Hon. Chinyere Emmaunel Igwe

An Abuja Magistrates’ Court on Monday discharged and acquitted a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Austin Nwachukwu, who was facing trial for allegedly spraying tear gas in the House and injuring a lawmaker, Chinyere Igwe during the fracas that rocked the House on June 22.

Delivering his ruling in a no-case submission by Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Mr. Chidi Aroh, the Chief Magistrate, Oyebisi Oyewumi discharged and acquitted Nwachukwu for want of evidence.

The court held that from the totality of evidence by only one witness from the the police, no prima facie case was established against the lawmaker saying that there was no reason to allow the charge to continue.

Magistrate Oyewumi held that the absence in court of the Clerk of the House, Alhaji M.A Sani Omori, who wrote the petition against Nwachukwu and the Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Bayero Nafada, showed that they were not interested in the case.

The court also held that the refusal of the victim of the alleged assault, Chinyere Igwe to make statement to the police and also appear to testify in the case was fatal to justice in the case.

Why I gave N150bn to UN – Turner

Ted Turner

American media mogul, Ted Turner, has said that his love for humanity and desire to bring an end to human suffering made him donate $1bn to the United Nations in 1998.

Turner, who is the founder and chairman of United Nations Foundation, said this at a news conference in Abuja on Monday, when members of the foundation visited the country to assess the successful polio eradication efforts in Nigeria.

Turner said, “I love people. I love the earth. I love everybody. When I come back home, my darling wife tells me ‘I love you’ but I say that doesn’t mean anything because you love everybody.

But that’s the truth and that’s why I gave the billion dollars to the UN because the UN is looking after everybody.

Turner, who owns the international news station Cable News Network, said he hoped to see a world where there were no more nuclear weapons while bombs are not dropped on people.

“I see a world that is different from what we have today. I see a world where we get rid of our nuclear weapons and stop dropping bombs on people but educate, civilise and train everybody. But this is a good start.

“Once we start doing things right, people can change. We don’t need any more wars or genocides. What we need to do is help each other and that’s what brought me into this and that’s why I am doing what I am doing.”

He promised that the Foundation would work with Nigeria until polio was eradicated from the country.

Bode George: Appeal court reserves judgment

Bode George

The Court of Appeal in Lagos on Monday reserved judgment in the appeal by the former Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Chief Olabode George and five others.

Three Justices of the Court of Appeal led by Justice Clara Ogunbiyi had adjourned the matter indefinitely, following the conclusion of adoption of briefs of arguments by the lawyers to the parties.

The appellate court added that the date of the judgment would be communicated to the parties accordingly.

Justice Joseph Oyewole of a Lagos High Court in Ikeja had on July 26, 2009, convicted George and five others and sentenced them to two-year jail term without an option fine.

The other convicts are the Managing Director of the NPA, Aminu Dabo, O. Abidoye, Abdullahi Tafida, Zanna Maidaribe and Sule Aliyu.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had prosecuted the convicts just as Justice Oyewole found them guilty of corrupt practices, contract splitting and willful disobedience to constituted authority.

But the convicts had appealed against the decision of the lower court and urged the appellate court to set aside their conviction.

We can’t act on EFCC’s list – PDP

Dr. Okwesileze Nwodo

The Peoples Democratic Party on Monday said it would not undermine the judicial process by acting on the Economic and Financial Crimes advisory list on alleged corrupt politicians.

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Rufai Alkali, said since it believed in the judicial process, only the courts could decide the fate of politicians on the list.

Alkali was reacting to an advisory published by a national daily (not THE PUNCH) on politicians and other prominent Nigerians with corruption cases.

The PDP had after a series of consultations with the EFCC asked for a list of its members with graft cases against them, with a view to stopping them from contesting elections in 2011.

United Arab Emirates court extradites Ibori to UK

Chief James Ibori

LAGOS—CERTAINLY, these are not the best of times for former two-time Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori. A United Arab Emirates, UAE Court of Appeal in Dubai, Sunday, ruled that he be extradited to Britain to face trials for allegedly looting the treasury of the state during his tenure.
This was just as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, described the Dubai Court ruling as a landmark judgment.
Ibori was also accused of laundering his alleged loot through several British banks, using lawyers, relatives and close associates.
The UAE court judgment followed evidence-laden request from Britain, supported by Nigeria. Sources close to the ex-governor said he would appeal the verdict, stressing that he has 30 days to file and receive an appellate judgment at the UAE Supreme Court.
An online publication said the Dubai Court, in a two-to-one split decision, held that Britain had shown enough reason to tie Ibori to the commission of a crime to warrant his extradition to London.
The Dubai legal system has three main stages: The Court of First Instance, the Court of Appeal and the Court of Cassation. The Ibori case started at the Court of Appeal, and is expected to go the Superior Court of Cassation before it is concluded.
Avalanche of evidence
The case took so long because the UK Metropolitan police had to translate an avalanche of evidence and affidavits to make a solid case about Ibori’s culpability in money laundering and thus made a strong application for his extradition to London.
The UK police also made references to the successful trial of two female associates of Ibori in London which has so far led to the jailing of Ibori’s sister, Christine Ibori-Ibie, and his mistress, Udoamaka Okoronkwo (nee Onuigbo) for money laundering.
Both women are serving prison terms at the all-female Holloway prison in London.
In 2007, a UK court froze assets allegedly belonging to Ibori worth $35m (£21m). His annual salary was less than $25,000.
He had already left the UK when his assets were seized. He was first arrested in Nigeria in December 2007. And in 2009, a court in Asaba cleared him of 170 charges of corruption, saying there was no clear evidence to convict him, sparking the anger of the EFCC.
Ibori was arrested in Dubai on May 13, 2010. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, accused him of stealing $290 million, about N43.5 billion. Last April, his supporters attacked the police who tried to arrest him in his home town. He thereafter left for Dubai where he was arrested.
Ibori’s wife, Theresa Nkoyo, and one of his UK_based lawyers, Bhadresh Gohil, are also currently facing trial in a London court.
EFCC says it’s landmark judgment
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has described the Dubai Court ruling which declared that former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori should be extradited to the United Kingdom to face corruption charges as a landmark judgment.
In a telephone chat, yesterday, spokesman of the anti_graft agency, Mr. Femi Babafemi said: “The Dubai court ruling is not unexpected in view of the weight of evidence provided by the EFCC, to support the process filed by the UK Met police.
“This is also an affirmation of the fact that justice is universal and can be served in any part of the world without hindrances.”
The former governor was said to have appealed against the judgment to the Supreme Court of the United Arab Emirate.

Kidnap fear grips Nigeria

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have stopped both the country’s female team and the Under_20 team from playing friendly matches outside Abuja because they fear the players could be abducted by kidnappers.
The Super Falcons are preparing to reclaim the African Women’s Championship they lost to Equatorial Guinea two years ago, later this month in South Africa, while the Flying Eagles take on Mauritius next week Sunday in the second leg of the African Youth Championship qualifier.
However, top Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) official, James Peters, has now informed that there was an embargo over the teams playing warm_up matches outside the country’s capital city following a surge in kidnappings across the country.
“It is not that we don’t have friendly matches for both the Super Falcons and Flying Eagles but we want to guard against a situation where any of the players would fall victim to kidnappers. That was why we don’t want the teams to leave Abuja and play friendly matches in other parts of the country,” former national team coach Peters said at the weekend/
“But we are not against teams coming to Abuja to play friendly matches against the two teams since it would help the teams in their preparations for their different programmes.”
Both teams have therefore been intensifying their preparations at the training pitch of Abuja National Stadium.
The Flying Eagles in particular recently undertook a playing tour of the eastern part of the country, where the rate of kidnappings has risen with over a dozen school children all under the age of 10 only recently released by government forces in Aba.
The Falcons are drawn in a first round group that includes hosts South Africa for the 2010 African Women’s Championship, which kicks off on October 29 in Johannesburg.
The Flying Eagles host Mauritius in a qualifier for the African Youth Championship in Libya next year.
The team led by coach John Obuh won the first clash 2-0 in Port Louis.

Lord of the Ribs gulps N20m

BasketMouth

The Lord of The Ribs show put together by loquacious comedian, Basketmouth set the young man back financially by more than N20million.
The money according to sources covered professional fees, flight tickets, local transport and accommodation for the foreign comedians that entertained at the event
The money also covered the N1million prize money and other prizes the Abia State born GLO ambassador dished out to the audience.
Lord of the ribs show is the first time any known Nigerian comedian would be entertaining alongside international tested acts.
And Basketmouth through this solo effort, may have paved way for a new course in the entertainment industry.
The show which held at the Expo centre of the Eko Hotel  Sunday was indeed an opener to the foreign exchange earning potentials of the comedy industry especially now that international dimension has been introduced.
From the moment Basketmouth stepped on stage to welcome the audience, it gave hints to the quality of what was to come that night.
Coming after the host, was Onyebuchi. Young though, he was able to hold his own against older and more experience performers. Bovi was there too and he thrilled the audience with jokes of his escapades as a married man.
Credits must go to local boys as they were not  intimidated by the presence of their international counterparts. In fact they held their own proudly. I go die, Okey Bakkassi, and  Ali Baba represented very well. .
First among the foreigners to rock the stage was South African born, Ndumiso and he did a great job making the crowd laugh. Kelvin J from UK who came on after him did not allow his white skin take the shine away from him. His rib cracking jokes about Nigeria only went to confirm the rising profile of the country, Nigeria.
Gina Yashere, the British born Nigerian comedian also had a thing or two to say about Nigeria as she reeled out of jokes Nigerians play on people abroad.

Akande, Osoba, others commend appeal court ruling on Ekiti

Action Congress National Chair
The National Chairman of Action Congress of Nigeria, Chief Bisi Akande and other eminent personalities have praised the Friday judgement by the Court of Appeal in Ilorin, Kwara State, in which the ACN governorship candidate, Dr Kayode Fayemi, was declared winner of the 2007 governorship election.

Other personalities who gave their views on the ruling are former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba; ACN governorship aspirant in Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun; Spokesman, Save Nigeria Group, Yinka Odumakin; Senatorial aspirant, ACN, Ogun East, Bisi Adegbuyi; governorship aspirant, ACN, Ogun State, Kayode Soyinka; Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Festus Keyamo; and deputy National Chairman, South-West, National Conscience Party, Chief Amitolu shittu.

Akande noted that the judiciary had done well in the entrenchment of the regime of justice and restoration of progressive democracy.

He said, “I am overwhelmed by the courage that the judiciary put into the judgement because Nigeria, for some years now, has been playing host to parasites. The PDP, before destroying themselves, are trying hard to destroy Nigeria. That the judgement was able to bring out the truth overwhelmed me. I congratulate Fayemi and I pray that God will save Nigerians from the parasites.”

Osoba said, “I thank God for Ekiti victory. Jesus is alive in Ekiti State and Nigeria.”

Odumakin said, “It is a reward for perseverance and tenacity; it is justice delayed but not justice denied. At the same time, it exposes how permissive of criminality our system is.”

Amosun described it as a ray of hope that all was not lost and that democracy could thrive in the country.

Adegbuyi said, ”It shows that the judiciary and other arms of government can help us achieve justice, fairness and truth in the polity. The terrain is now changing.”

Soyinka said nothing could be so emotionally draining than knowing that one had been robbed at the polls and then had to fight in court for four years to get justice.

The ACN, Ogun State chapter, said the ruling of the Court of Appeal was outstanding triumph of democracy and the rule of law.

Keyamo, in a press release dated Friday October, 15, said after the celebration, the task before Fayemi would be to justify the confidence reposed in him by delivering good governance, by shunning corruption and by leading his people aright.

He said, ”The decision of the Court of Appeal, which nullified the election of Engr. Segun Oni and declared Dr. Kayode Fayemi as the duly elected Governor of Ekiti State, is yet one of those bright spots in the annals of our judiciary.

”Given the facts of the case that were in the public domain, especially as it concerns Ido-Osi Local Government Area and the controversial somersault of the then Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Ayoka Adebayo, it would have been a travesty of justice, a destruction of democratic ethos, and a day-light political armed-robbery, had the judgment been otherwise.

“With this judgment, those remaining dark shadows that are still hanging ominously over the judiciary are beginning to give way. This kind of judgment makes us proud as Lawyers; makes us proud as Nigerians and gives real hope to our democratic future.

”Ayoka Adebayo must be arrested, detained, charged, tried publicly and sentenced to jail with hard labour. This will serve as a painful deterrent to others not to toy with our democratic future.”

Shittu said the judgement was victory for the oppressed and the downtrodden masses, not only in Ekiti, but also in Nigeria in general.

He said, “This is real victory for democracy and the rule of law; it is victory for the downtrodden masses of Ekiti who have been yearning for political salvation. This has finally laid to rest problem of lack of vision and the judgement has brought succour to those who were killed and brutalised in the struggle for true democracy.”
